What do cantons decide about cannabis?

The legal basis is federal. Enforcement and the location of research differ locally.

CannabisGesetz.ch editorial deskPublished 7 Nov 2026Reviewed 7 Nov 2026

Context

The FOPH reports differences in applying fixed penalties. A study site establishes neither cantonal legalisation nor a particular police practice.

What to check

Ask the cantonal authority about local enforcement. For trial participation, use the published location and residency criteria of the specific project.
